Reading have strengthened their squad ahead of the new campaign by completing the signing of midfielder Josh Stokes on a season-long loan from Championship club Bristol City.
The 22-year-old arrives after gaining valuable experience during consecutive loan spells in League One, where he continued to develop his attacking qualities and creative influence. Stokes spent the second half of last season on loan at Stockport County, where he played an important role in the club’s impressive campaign. The attacking midfielder scored five goals in 26 appearances, helping Stockport reach both the Vertu Trophy Final and the League One play-off final.
Before that, he enjoyed another productive loan spell with Cambridge United during the 2024–25 season. Across 34 league matches, Stokes found the net eight times, highlighting his ability to contribute consistently from midfield.
