Alexander Isak has said joining Liverpool from Newcastle was an “easy decision”, despite the uncertainty surrounding his future before the move.
The Sweden international completed his transfer to Liverpool from Newcastle on deadline day in September 2025. The deal was worth £125 million, making it a British-record transfer fee.
In an interview, Isak said Liverpool’s size, ambition, and determination to sign him played a major role in his decision.
“Liverpool is a massive club, and everything about the club made it pretty clear,” Isak said. He also highlighted the club’s ambitions and its strong desire to bring him to Anfield.
Isak Refuses to Regret Liverpool Move
Isak’s final months at Newcastle were complicated. He missed pre-season and trained with former club Real Sociedad while uncertainty continued over his future. The striker also claimed that promises made to him at Newcastle had been broken.
His first campaign at Liverpool was then disrupted by injuries and a leg fracture that kept him out from December until April. He managed three Premier League goals during the season.
Despite those difficulties, Isak insists he never regretted his decision to move to Liverpool.
Asked whether he had ever questioned the transfer, the striker gave a straightforward response.
“No, never. I would never think like that,” he said.
The 26-year-old has already equalled his previous season’s Premier League goal tally after scoring three times in his first four league appearances this campaign.
Isak admitted that recovering from a serious injury was difficult but said he prefers to focus on what lies ahead rather than look back at setbacks.
He added that he is feeling positive about the current season and believes there is plenty for Liverpool to achieve.
World Cup Experience Helped Isak Regain Rhythm
After making only 22 appearances and playing 1,032 minutes for Liverpool last season, Isak represented Sweden at the World Cup during the summer.
He scored once and registered three assists before Sweden were eliminated by France in the last 32.
For Isak, appearing at a World Cup was an important personal achievement, particularly after the injury problems he had experienced.
“Playing for your country in a World Cup is a dream of most people,” he said.
The tournament also gave him valuable playing time and allowed him to rebuild his rhythm and confidence before returning to Liverpool for pre-season.
Liverpool Want Isak to Defend from the Front
Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has also outlined an important role for Isak within his tactical approach.
According to the striker, Iraola wants him to contribute defensively from the front, with pressing viewed as part of Liverpool’s attacking strategy.
Isak explained that the idea is to defend in positions that allow Liverpool to win possession and immediately launch attacks towards the opposition goal.
The striker said Iraola has encouraged him to score goals while also demanding defensive work, describing Liverpool’s pressing approach as an attacking weapon.
Under Iraola, Liverpool are looking to play an aggressive, high-intensity style. The team have recorded the highest number of sprints in the Premier League this season.
Isak believes that approach can benefit both him and the team because it encourages Liverpool to move the ball forward quickly and involve their attacking players.
“It’s not just about getting the ball to me, it’s about getting the ball forward and to all of the offensive players quickly,” he said.
Isak Focused on Winning Trophies
Isak enters the season with 60 Premier League goals to his name. His most productive campaign in the competition came with Newcastle in 2024-25, when he scored 23 times.
Despite his individual record, the Sweden striker says he does not set specific personal targets.
Instead, his main objective is to help Liverpool compete for silverware.
“Everyone knows that success for this club is winning trophies,” Isak said. He added that while he wants to score in every game, he is not someone who prefers setting individual statistical targets.
