Man Utd Blow 2-0 Lead as Brighton End 50-Year Old Trafford Record

Manchester United suffered a dramatic Carabao Cup defeat at Old Trafford as Brighton and Hove Albion overturned a two-goal deficit to secure a place in the last 16.

United appeared to be in complete control after taking a 2-0 lead early in the match. However, Brighton produced a remarkable second-half comeback, scoring twice in just four minutes to turn the contest on its head.

The result marked the first time Manchester United had surrendered a two-goal advantage at home and gone on to lose since a 3-2 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in 1976.

Brighton’s travelling supporters celebrated enthusiastically in one corner of Old Trafford, while the home crowd expressed its frustration by booing United off the pitch at full time.

United’s Early Advantage Disappears

Manchester United looked to have made the ideal start when academy prospect Shea Lacey scored only eight minutes into his first senior start.

Mason Mount then extended the hosts’ advantage just two minutes later. The midfielder reacted quickly to fire home after Marcus Rashford’s initial effort had been blocked.

With United two goals ahead inside the opening 10 minutes, the evening seemed to be developing into a comfortable outing for head coach Michael Carrick.

Brighton, however, responded before the interval. Charalampos Kostoulas reduced the deficit shortly before half-time, giving the visitors renewed belief.

The equaliser arrived when Brighton captain Pascal Gross found himself unmarked near the edge of the penalty area. He controlled a clearance from halfway, turned into space, and struck a low shot beyond Karl Darlow, who was making his Manchester United debut in goal.

Brighton Complete the Comeback

The turnaround was completed four minutes after Gross’s equaliser. Kostoulas became the provider, cutting the ball back into the area for substitute Maxim de Cuyper, who finished confidently to put Brighton in front.

Carrick introduced captain Bruno Fernandes with 18 minutes remaining as United searched for a way back into the game.

Rashford came close to restoring parity, but Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele produced an important save to deny him. At the other end, United goalkeeper Darlow was also forced into action, preventing Diego Gomez from adding a fourth goal for the visitors.

The defeat adds to a difficult period for Manchester United. It followed their disappointing Manchester derby loss to 10-man Manchester City and the news that 15-year-old academy prospect JJ Gabriel had informed the club of his intention to leave.

Third Straight Domestic Cup Exit

The loss represents Manchester United’s third consecutive domestic cup disappointment.

Last season, United suffered an EFL Cup defeat against League Two side Grimsby Town before Brighton defeated them in the FA Cup at Old Trafford in January.

Brighton’s victory also ended a long-standing record at the stadium, making the comeback one of the most notable Carabao Cup results of the round.

The Seagulls now advance to the last 16, while United are left to assess another damaging result in front of their home supporters.
