Manchester City Edge Sunderland in 5-3 Premier League Thriller
Manchester City survived a thrilling encounter against Sunderland to secure a 5-3 victory and move three points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
The eight-goal contest featured several momentum swings, with Sunderland repeatedly responding to City’s goals. However, the home side eventually held on to maintain its perfect league record.
City and Sunderland Trade Goals
Manchester City opened the scoring after just nine minutes when Enzo Fernandez found the net with a cleverly executed free-kick. It was his first goal since completing his £125 million move from Chelsea.
Sunderland, who had made a lively start, quickly responded. Enzo Le Fée produced an excellent pass to release Brian Brobbey, and the Netherlands striker calmly guided the ball beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma to level the contest.
The visitors continued to challenge City and looked dangerous in possession. However, an error while attempting to build from the back gave the hosts an opportunity. City moved the ball to Rayan Cherki, who finished accurately into the bottom corner to restore their lead.
Sunderland refused to lose momentum. Le Fée once again found space behind the City defence, this time picking out Thomas Meunier. Rather than shooting, Meunier unselfishly played the ball across the goal for Brobbey to tap into an unguarded net.
A lengthy VAR review followed to determine whether the goal should stand, but the decision eventually went in Sunderland’s favour. The equaliser reflected the visitors’ strong performance during the opening period.
City gradually began to control possession as the first half progressed, spending longer spells inside Sunderland’s half.
The hosts moved ahead again two minutes before the interval. Sunderland failed to clear a cross from the right, allowing Antoine Semenyo to strike a powerful effort into the net.
Sunderland could not produce another immediate response, and City nearly added a fourth before half-time. Erling Haaland, however, sent his shot wide from a promising position after Iliman Ndiaye had created the opportunity.
Second Half Produces More Drama
The second half initially developed at a slower pace, but City extended their advantage in a moment that involved both fortune and quality.
A pass from Marc Guehi, intended for Haaland, reached Semenyo instead. The forward took advantage of the opportunity and fired a left-footed shot into the far corner to make it 4-2.
Sunderland responded almost immediately. Granit Xhaka delivered a clever pass to Nilson Angulo, who sent the ball across the face of goal. Brobbey then managed to force it over the line, completing his first senior hat-trick and reducing the deficit to one goal.
City attempted to slow the match down through controlled possession, but Sunderland continued to threaten.
The visitors came close to drawing level when Donnarumma failed to collect a high delivery into the penalty area. A loose touch from Ruben Dias sent the ball back towards the City goal, forcing the defender to react quickly and clear it off the line.
Donnarumma appeared uncertain again from the long throw that followed, but City managed to withstand the pressure.
The decisive moment arrived nine minutes from full time. Josko Gvardiol delivered a cross towards the far post, where Haaland slid in to finish and give City a 5-3 lead.
The goal was initially ruled out for offside, just as Haaland’s goal against Manchester United the previous weekend had been. However, a review confirmed that Gvardiol had timed his movement correctly, and the goal was awarded.
The result means Haaland has now scored against every Premier League team he has faced. City also enter the international break at the top of the table with a 100% league record.
Five victories from five matches, 13 league goals and additional wins in European competition and the Carabao Cup represent an impressive start to the campaign.

Manchester City Show Attacking Strength but Defensive Concerns Remain
City’s results have been highly encouraging, but their performance against Sunderland also exposed areas that require improvement.
Following a long period of success under Pep Guardiola, the club faces a new chapter, and questions remain about how the team will develop during the transition.
Despite collecting another victory, City were far from convincing for significant periods of the match. A defence that had conceded only two league goals before this fixture looked vulnerable, while Sunderland reportedly produced an expected-goals figure of 4.25.
Nevertheless, City’s attacking quality once again made the difference. Fernandez’s inventive free-kick and the team’s ability to score five goals demonstrated their threat in the final third.
There is still considerable room for improvement, particularly defensively. However, the capacity to find different ways to win can provide a valuable foundation as the season progresses.
Sunderland Analysis: Encouraging Performance Without a Reward
Sunderland have experienced a demanding week, with a return to European competition in midweek followed by league matches against two of the Premier League’s leading teams.
Based on their performances, the Black Cats may feel disappointed to have taken no points from those two league fixtures.
Sunderland began positively at the Etihad, and Nilson Angulo had an opportunity to put the visitors ahead before City scored with their first attack through Fernandez.
Rather than allowing the early setback to affect them, Sunderland responded with confidence and continued to take the game to their opponents.
Throughout the match, Regis Le Bris’ team repeatedly recovered from difficult moments. Even after falling 5-3 behind late in the game, the visitors continued to search for another opening.
Dan Ballard and Malick Fofana both had opportunities that could have created a tense finish for City. Had either chance been converted, the closing stages might have been considerably more difficult for the hosts.
The goals Sunderland conceded will concern Le Bris, particularly the defensive errors that contributed to City’s scoring opportunities. However, the overall display offers encouragement.
If Sunderland can maintain this level of performance and improve their defensive organisation, they should have opportunities to collect points in the matches ahead.
