Matt Taylor Says Exeter City Must Score More Goals

Exeter City manager Matt Taylor believes his team must become more productive in attack, despite making an impressive start to the League Two season defensively.

The Grecians have allowed only six goals across their first 10 league matches, matching Walsall for the best defensive record in the division. The achievement also ranks as the second-best defensive start in Exeter’s history after 10 games, behind only their records from the 1973-74 and 1986-87 campaigns.

However, Exeter’s defensive strength has not been matched by their attacking performances. The team have scored just six goals in 10 matches, leaving them with the third-lowest scoring record in League Two. Their last two victories have both come by a narrow 1-0 margin.

Speaking to BBC Radio Devon, Taylor welcomed his side’s defensive consistency but stressed that improvements are needed at the opposite end of the pitch.

Matt Taylor Highlights the Importance of Team Defence

Taylor explained that Exeter’s defensive success is the result of collective effort rather than the work of their defenders and goalkeeper alone.

He pointed to Josh Gordon as an important example, describing him as the team’s first line of defence. Taylor also praised George Birch, Anthony Scully and Taylor Perry for the work they do to put pressure on opponents and protect the back line.

According to the Exeter manager, the players’ positioning, work rate and commitment have helped the team limit opposition scoring opportunities.

Taylor is pleased with the six goals conceded in the opening 10 matches and wants his side to maintain a similarly strong defensive record over the next 10 games.

Exeter City Need to Find Their Scoring Touch

While the defensive numbers have been encouraging, Taylor knows that Exeter cannot rely on narrow victories throughout the season. Scoring just six goals in their first 10 matches highlights the need for greater creativity and efficiency in front of goal.

The manager wants his players to retain their defensive discipline, organisation and determination while becoming more effective in attack.

Taylor believes that combining their existing defensive solidity with an improved goalscoring return would make Exeter a much stronger team. Supporters following the latest football news and match developments can also visit Football Today for further coverage.

The challenge for the Grecians now is to build on their defensive foundation without losing the qualities that have made them difficult to beat. If Exeter can find a better balance between defending and scoring, they will have a stronger platform for the matches ahead.
