Manchester City produced a remarkable second-half comeback to defeat Arsenal 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium, overturning the lead twice and piling further pressure on Gunners manager Renee Slegers.
The victory keeps Manchester City perfect at the top of the Women’s Super League, with five wins from five matches. Arsenal, meanwhile, are already 10 points behind the defending champions after just five league games.
Lauren Hemp was the standout performer for City, scoring twice, while Khadija Shaw completed the comeback with a late goal. Kerstin Casparij also made an immediate impact from the bench with a superb strike.
Arsenal took the lead during a relatively cautious opening period. Lisa Baum reacted quickest inside the area to bundle the ball home from close range.
City responded three minutes later. Hemp received the ball in a difficult position but produced a powerful finish from a tight angle to bring the hosts level.
The first half remained competitive, with both sides creating opportunities without being able to establish complete control.
Arsenal made the brighter start after the interval and regained the advantage when Alessia Russo pounced on a misplaced pass from Yui Hasegawa inside the penalty area. The England forward made no mistake, firing into the far corner to put Arsenal 2-1 ahead.
City were forced to respond again, and they did so in spectacular fashion.
Substitute Kerstin Casparij had an immediate impact, curling her first touch beyond the goalkeeper and into the top-right corner. The goal completely changed the momentum of the contest.
Manchester City then moved ahead for the first time when Hemp found space and calmly sent the ball underneath goalkeeper Anneke Borbe.
Arsenal continued to search for another equaliser, but City remained dangerous on the counter. Shaw eventually put the result beyond doubt late in the match when her effort from the edge of the box took a slight deflection before finding the net.
Both teams had further opportunities, but City held on to complete a 4-2 victory and maintain their 100% start to the season.

Manchester City Show They Can Survive a Major Test
Manchester City’s opening four league matches had produced four victories, but this was arguably their toughest challenge of the season so far.
Arsenal arrived with plenty to prove after a difficult start to the campaign, making the encounter an intriguing tactical contest. City enjoyed periods of pressure during the first half and created several openings through Beth Mead and Shaw.
Arsenal also threatened. Emily Fox forced Ayaka Yamashita into action, while City’s forwards initially found it difficult to influence the match.
That changed when Hemp equalised. Her reaction after scoring showed just how important the goal was, particularly after Arsenal had managed to take the lead.
Shaw had a frustrating afternoon for long periods. The striker missed a promising opportunity early in the second half after a heavy touch allowed Borbe to collect the ball before she could finish.
She was denied again when Leah Williamson intervened at an important moment following a dangerous delivery from Carlotta Wamser.
Those missed chances could have proved costly because Arsenal looked increasingly dangerous after the break.
However, Casparij’s introduction changed the game almost immediately. Her outstanding goal restored City’s belief, while Hemp then completed the turnaround.
Shaw eventually found her finishing touch and sealed another important victory for Andree Jeglertz’s side.
With five wins from five matches, Manchester City have established themselves as the team everyone else must catch in the early stages of the WSL title race.
Arsenal’s Difficult Start Gets Worse
For Arsenal, the defeat represents another major setback.
The Gunners arrived in Manchester already seven points behind City and knew that another loss would make the gap even more difficult to overcome.
Pressure has been building around Renee Slegers following Arsenal’s inconsistent start. Their midweek Women’s Champions League draw with Paris FC had already attracted attention, and the defeat at City will only increase scrutiny.
Despite their problems, Arsenal showed character by taking the lead twice.
Baum’s opener gave the visitors something to defend, although City believed the goal may have involved an offside decision in the build-up.
Hemp’s equaliser restored parity, but Arsenal suffered another setback before half-time when Mariona Caldentey left the pitch in tears with what appeared to be a hamstring problem.
Arsenal nevertheless started the second half strongly.
Russo provided a much-needed moment of quality when she took advantage of the space available and fired into the far corner to make it 2-1.
The goal was particularly encouraging for Arsenal because scoring has been one of their biggest problems in the WSL. Before the trip to Manchester, they had scored only twice in their opening league matches.
But the advantage did not last.
City responded with two goals in quick succession, turning the game around and leaving Arsenal chasing the match once again.
The Gunners ultimately could not recover after losing their lead for a second time, and Shaw’s late strike confirmed a damaging 4-2 defeat.
With the title race already moving quickly, Arsenal now face the difficult task of closing a significant gap to the defending champions.
Hemp Leads City’s Comeback
Lauren Hemp was the clear standout performer for Manchester City, scoring twice and playing a major role in the turnaround.
Her first goal came shortly after Arsenal had taken the lead and gave City an immediate response.
Her second proved even more important, putting City ahead for the first time after Casparij had levelled the contest.
Khadija Shaw also played a decisive role despite struggling to make her usual impact for much of the match. Her late goal finally ended Arsenal’s hopes of another comeback.
Casparij’s contribution from the bench was equally significant, with her first-touch finish providing the spark City needed.
A Warning Sign for Arsenal
Arsenal’s ability to compete with Manchester City for long periods will offer some encouragement, but the manner of the defeat is a major concern.
The Gunners twice held the lead but were unable to protect it, conceding three goals after Russo restored their advantage.
For City, the comeback demonstrates the depth and attacking quality available to Jeglertz. Even when their main forwards were struggling to influence the match, a substitute was able to change the contest almost instantly.
Manchester City now return to the top of the WSL with a perfect five wins from five.
Arsenal, meanwhile, must find answers quickly. With the gap already at 10 points, their margin for error in the title race has become extremely small.
