Leeds United have completed the signing of James Trafford from Manchester City in a deal worth up to £45 million, making the England international the club’s new first-choice goalkeeper ahead of the upcoming season.
The 23-year-old leaves the Etihad Stadium only a year after Manchester City exercised their buy-back clause to re-sign him from Burnley for £27 million. Despite returning to his boyhood club, Trafford found first-team opportunities limited and has now opted for a fresh challenge at Elland Road.

Record-Breaking Transfer for a British Goalkeeper
Trafford’s switch to Leeds sets a new British transfer record for a goalkeeper, surpassing the £30 million Everton paid Sunderland for Jordan Pickford in 2017.
The fee also places Trafford among the most expensive goalkeepers in football history. Only Kepa Arrizabalaga and Alisson Becker have commanded higher transfer fees, highlighting the confidence Leeds have placed in the young shot-stopper’s long-term potential.
Including both of his transfers involving Burnley and Manchester City, more than £80 million has now been invested in Trafford throughout his professional career.
Manchester City Retain Future Interest
Although Trafford has left Manchester City permanently, the Premier League champions have protected their long-term interests.
As part of the agreement, City will reportedly keep a 20% sell-on clause and retain matching rights on any future transfer offer, allowing them the opportunity to re-sign the goalkeeper if another club submits a bid that matches their valuation.
Trafford Seeks Regular First-Team Football
Trafford was included in England’s squad for this summer’s World Cup but did not make an appearance during the tournament.
Last season he featured 17 times for Manchester City, including four Premier League matches, while playing an important role in the club’s successful Carabao Cup and FA Cup campaigns.
However, the arrival of Champions League-winning goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma significantly reduced Trafford’s chances of becoming City’s long-term number one, making a move away the most practical option.
Leeds Continue Squad Rebuild
Manager Daniel Farke has made strengthening the goalkeeping department a priority following the departures of Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier during the summer transfer window.
Although Lucas Perri and Alex Cairns remain at the club, Leeds clearly believe Trafford offers the quality and potential needed to establish himself as their first-choice goalkeeper for years to come.
Perri lost his starting place during the second half of last season and did not feature in the Premier League after Leeds’ defeat to Newcastle in early January, creating an opening that Trafford is expected to fill immediately.
Championship Success Showed Trafford’s Potential
Much of Trafford’s reputation was built during his excellent spell at Burnley.
The talented goalkeeper conceded just 16 goals in 45 Championship appearances, helping the Clarets secure promotion back to the Premier League. His performances earned widespread praise, with former Burnley manager Scott Parker describing him as “world class.”
Trafford also recorded 29 clean sheets and an impressive 84.47% save percentage, establishing himself as one of the Championship’s standout performers.
Although he has made only 32 Premier League appearances, Leeds believe his development and consistency suggest he is ready to become one of England’s leading goalkeepers.
Journey from Manchester City Academy to Elland Road
Trafford began his football career in Manchester City’s academy before gaining valuable senior experience during loan spells at Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers.
He joined Burnley in 2023, making 73 appearances before City activated their buy-back clause one year later.
Now, after another move worth a significant transfer fee, Trafford begins a new chapter with Leeds United, where expectations will be high as the club looks to strengthen its squad for the challenges ahead.
