Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has called for a significant improvement from his players after their disappointing Premier League defeat against Sunderland.
Wilson Isidor came off the bench to score the decisive goal as Sunderland secured their first league victory of the season, while Fulham failed to register a shot on target.
Arbeloa, in only his third competitive game in charge of the Cottagers, was particularly unhappy with the team’s attitude and intensity throughout the match.
Isidor was introduced in the 64th minute and quickly became one of the game’s most influential players. He came close to opening the scoring when he found space inside the penalty area following good work from Granit Xhaka and Enzo le Fee, but his effort struck the base of the left-hand post.
The Sunderland forward eventually got his goal 11 minutes later.
Substitute Habib Diarra created the opening with an explosive run down the right before sending a low delivery across the Fulham penalty area. Bernd Leno was unable to claim the cross, allowing Isidor to react first and put Sunderland ahead in the 75th minute.
Arbeloa made no attempt to hide his frustration after the final whistle.
“I didn’t like the attitude of my team,” the Fulham boss said, criticising his side for failing to compete, run and maintain the required technical standard.
Fulham had already suffered a 3-2 loss against Chelsea in their opening Premier League fixture, but Arbeloa believes the determination shown in that match needs to become a regular feature of the team’s performances.
“Against Chelsea at home, it’s easy to run and fight but you have to do it every game,” he said.
For Arbeloa, competing for every second ball and demonstrating the right mentality are fundamental requirements.
Fulham controlled 58.4% of possession but were unable to turn that advantage into meaningful attacking opportunities. Their inability to produce a shot on target highlighted their struggles in the final third.
The result leaves Fulham with two defeats from their opening two league matches.
Sunderland’s Defensive Organisation Makes the Difference
The opening period was far from spectacular, with both teams struggling to make the most of promising attacking situations.
Sunderland had an early opportunity in the fifth minute after Xhaka switched play towards the flank. Thomas Meunier then delivered a cross into the box, but Trai Hume could not connect properly with the ball from close range.
The victory represents an important response for Sunderland following their opening-day defeat against promoted Ipswich.
The Black Cats had lost 2-1 at Portman Road after conceding a late winner scored by former Sunderland winger Jack Clarke. Their European draw subsequently provided another boost, giving the club and its supporters plenty to look forward to.
Sunderland’s upcoming European campaign includes an away trip to Italian giants AC Milan in December, while AZ Alkmaar, Dinamo Zagreb, Jagiellonia and Levski Sofia are among the teams scheduled to visit them.
They will also travel to Portugal, Poland and Belgium during the competition.
That additional schedule creates a major challenge for Regis le Bris and his squad. Sunderland face a minimum of eight extra European matches, meaning Thursday-to-Sunday turnarounds could become a regular part of their season.
After losing their opening league fixture, collecting three points against Fulham was therefore particularly valuable.
Xhaka stood out for Sunderland, combining his passing range with experience and leadership in midfield.
The defensive performance was also a major reason for the victory. Nordi Mukiele and Romaine Mundle produced important blocks at crucial moments as Sunderland successfully prevented Fulham from finding a way through.
Le Bris was delighted to see his team respond after their difficult opening weekend.
“It’s good to be back at home and win again,” he said.
The Sunderland manager also praised his players for limiting Fulham’s attacking threat despite facing a side that enjoyed the majority of possession.
Fulham Face Questions After Another League Loss
Arbeloa arrived at Fulham following Marco Silva’s departure in June, with the team initially making an encouraging start in front of goal.
Fulham scored five times across their first two competitive fixtures, including a 3-0 Carabao Cup victory over League One side AFC Wimbledon.
However, the attacking momentum disappeared against Sunderland.
Fulham regularly moved into useful areas but lacked the quality needed to turn those situations into genuine chances.
Josh King had their clearest opportunity while the score remained 0-0. Alex Iwobi found him in space, but King could not keep his shot down and sent the ball over the crossbar.
Gonzalo Garcia also endured a difficult afternoon.
The striker had joined Fulham from Real Madrid earlier in August and had scored in each of his first two appearances. Against Sunderland, however, he struggled to make an impact.
Garcia was unable to seriously test goalkeeper Robin Roefs, with his best opportunities blocked by Mukiele and Mundle.
Fulham had beaten Sunderland both home and away last season, making this result even more frustrating for the Cottagers.
Their next league fixture gives Arbeloa an immediate opportunity to respond. Fulham will welcome Crystal Palace next Saturday, with both sides searching for their first Premier League points after losing their opening two matches.
With the transfer window closing on Tuesday, Fulham may also consider whether further attacking reinforcements are required.
The lack of creativity and cutting edge against Sunderland could strengthen the argument for adding another attacking option before the deadline.
Arbeloa now has plenty to address. If Fulham are to build on last season’s 11th-place finish, they will need greater intensity, stronger competition for possession and considerably more threat in the final third.
