Cardiff’s Principality Stadium has been selected to stage the 2029 UEFA Women’s Champions League final, bringing one of European football’s biggest fixtures to Wales.

The 73,931-capacity stadium previously hosted the men’s Champions League final in 2017, when Real Madrid defeated Juventus. It will now welcome the continent’s leading women’s clubs later this decade.

Football Association of Wales (FAW) chief executive Noel Mooney described the announcement as an important milestone for Welsh football.
“It’s brilliant news for Cymru and the FAW and the journey that we’re on, particularly in the women’s game,” Mooney said.

The decision comes nine years after Cardiff City Stadium hosted the 2017 Women’s Champions League final. Paris Saint-Germain faced Lyon in that contest, with Lyon eventually lifting the trophy after winning a penalty shootout following a goalless draw through extra time.

For the 2029 final, Principality Stadium will be referred to as the National Stadium of Wales to meet UEFA’s sponsorship regulations.

Mooney believes the event can have a lasting impact beyond the final itself.

“This is about much more than one night in 2029. Our ambition is for the UEFA women’s Champions League final to become a catalyst for the continued transformation of women’s and girls’ football in Wales.”

The stadium, which is owned by the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) and is the largest venue in Wales, also hosted the FA Community Shield earlier this year. In that match, Premier League champions Arsenal defeated Manchester City 3-0.

WRU group chief executive Abi Tierney also welcomed UEFA’s decision, describing it as a major moment for women’s sport in Wales and throughout Europe.

“We are absolutely delighted that our stadium has been selected to host the 2029 UEFA women’s Champions League final, bringing one of the biggest occasions in world football to Cardiff and Wales,” Tierney said.

She added that the continued expansion of women’s sport is encouraging more young athletes and supporters to become involved, while hosting such a prestigious fixture highlights the growing importance of the women’s game.
